Alla Carta 15 The Mediterraneo Issue
“En des temps comme ceux-ci, la fuite est le seul moyen pour se maintenir vifs et continuer à rêver.”
—Henri Laborit
With this quote Gabriele Salvatores opens the film Mediterraneo, giving his audience a clear, yet disenchanted idea of what they are about to see. Solitude, isolation, dreams, boredom, sex are some of the themes covered in the film. And it all takes place on an island. That is where this issue of Alla Carta is rooted. An island understood not as a physical place or a portion of land surrounded by water, but rather as a point, a moment, a state of mind in which one isolates oneself. Is isolation solitude? In times like these, when hyper-connection has shone a light into every dark corner of our existence, when the concept of community is calculated by the number of interactions and boredom appears to be defeated, solitude is the only means of keeping alive. Sex is a pretext, a dip in the pool is an opportunity, dance is a tool. You must be very strong to love solitude. We have been very strong here.
